Our CDM Coordination and Principal Designer services

In April 2015, the Construction Design and Management Regulations changed, re-assigning the role of CDM coordinator to that of Principal Designer. The actual role of the CDM coordinator however, hasn’t changed.

The role of the Principal Designer involves ensuring that the design of a construction project will not put at risk the health and safety of those involved in it. They are there to ensure that a project is designed carefully and with adherence to UK health and safety legislation, minimising risk and potential for injury during the project. A Principle Designer should always advise on health and safety issues during the planning and design phases of a construction project, and should have a wealth of experience in management, planning, communications and construction. Design decisions that are made pre-construction are highly important, therefore a Principal Designer must ensure:

  • The health and safety of all during the pre-construction phase, ensuring that it is carefully planned, monitored and managed so that high levels of safety can be implemented throughout the construction process.
  • That all pre-construction information is clearly communicated to contractors and designers who need it.
  • That all designers working on a project are clearly made aware of any health and safety risks, and act to either eliminate or control them.
  • Ensuring everyone involved in pre-construction has clear communication and knows their duties, especially regarding health and safety.
  • Liaison with the principal contractor, informing them of risk control that needs to be implemented during construction.

This is where we come in. At Construction Health & Safety Ltd., our team of professional Principal Designers (former CDM coordinators), have an in-depth understanding and knowledge of design management. We will help to advise you on the duty holders’ competence, prepare all health and safety paperwork for you, and notify the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) of your project. We can help to advise your team on the reviewing of design changes before and during construction, to ensure that your planning process runs smoothly and successfully. Let us do all the work for you, or we can advise on certain areas of your project – the choice is yours.
